Jeremias Gotthelf verfasste sowohl journalistische Schriften als auch Romane, Geschichten, Erzählungen, Kalendergeschichten sowie einige Aufsätze. Gotthelf gilt vor allem durch die Rahmennovelle Die schwarze Spinne als Vertreter des deutschen Biedermeiers und tat sich mit christlich-humanistischen Forderungen innerhalb seiner Werke hervor.
